This 21 day travel itinerary will introduce you to some of southern Australia’s best assets.  Start your three week journey in the bustling hub of Sydney and drink in the sheer beauty of the city’s famous harbour. Navigate down the coast and pass by scenic Eden and popular Lakes Entrance, great for fishing, swimming and relaxing. Spend a couple of days in cultural Melbourne and experience the city’s laidback café culture.  Explore the magnificent treasures of the Great Ocean Road and marvel at the Twelve Apostles before witnessing the natural beauty of Mt Gambier and peaceful vines of Adelaide. Make your way back to the heart of Victorian country and enjoy red sunsets and national parks perfect for family picnics. Finish the tour back in magnificent Sydney.

Day 1: Sydney

Experience the magic of vibrant Sydney. Take a cruise past the magnificent Sydney Harbour Bridge and Opera House. Visit Manly and Bondi Beach and dive headfirst into popular surf culture. Dine at The Rocks at one of the many up-market restaurants or take a whale cruise from the harbour and get up close and personal with nature’s giants of the sea.

Day 2: Sydney to Eden

Discover the beauty of this historic whaling town, perfect for whale watching tours between May and November. Lie on the unspoilt sands of the stunning Aislings Beach or stop by the must-see Eden Killer Whale Museum with its display of whaling gear, boats and photographs. Experience the raw beauty of the area at Ben Boyd National Park.

Day 3: Eden to Lakes Entrance

Experience Australia’s largest inland network of waterways at idyllic Lakes Entrance in Gippsland. Absorb the town’s seaside charm and explore the beautiful Ninety Mile Beach. Sample the exquisite seafood of Australia’s Seafood Capital from the great local restaurants and explore the great lakes by boat, paddleboat or catamaran.

Day 4: Lakes Entrance to Sale

Stay at the gateway of the vast Gippsland Lakes and enjoy the tranquil beauty of Sale. Relax at the Port of Sale precinct and enjoy boutique cafes and restaurants. Spend the afternoon wandering through the town or walk through beautiful fern gullies in the nearby Tarra Bulga National Park.

Day 5: Sale to Melbourne 

Absorb Melbourne’s bustling metropolitan area. Enjoy lunch in the city’s quirky Dewitt Street, visit hip St Kilda with its leafy street cafes and iconic Luna Park. Stop by the grandiose Crown Casino, visit the Aquarium and get lost in the many shops, boutiques and cafes that this marvellous city has to offer. Marvel at the unique architecture in Federation Square and take a photo of grand Flinders Street Station.

Day 6: Melbourne

Take a walk down Brunswick Street and eat at one of the hipster cafes and restaurants. Stroll through Victoria Market and buy fresh produce, Australian souvenirs and local arts and crafts. Visit the Melbourne Zoo and watch baby elephants splashing around in the water.

Day 7: Melbourne to Geelong

Take in the fast paced beat of this cultural city just outside of Melbourne. Stroll along the picturesque Geelong Waterfront and witness stunning views of Corio Bay from Eastern Beach. Enjoy a late lunch at one of the laidback waterfront restaurants at Cunningham Pier. Walk around the town and absorb the historic buildings or enjoy a picnic lunch in the Botanic Gardens.

Day 8: Geelong to Lorne

Appreciate the beautiful coastline of ‘Mediterranean’ Lorne, relax at one of the many spas or catch a wave at one of the many surfing hot spots. Take a leisurely stroll to the rapids or Erskine Falls. Sit and relax at one of the great cascades between the Pier and The Swing Bridge.

Day 9: Lorne to Apollo Bay 

Make the short drive to Apollo Bay at the foothills of the mighty Otways and enjoy all the Great Ocean Road has to offer. Observe local seal colonies or experience a deep sea fishing expedition. Enjoy local seafood at one of the area’s cafes or restaurants. Take a drive into the Otways or discover the oldest lighthouse in Australia.

Day 10: Apollo Bay to Port Campbell

Admire the magnificent coastal scenery at idyllic Port Campbell. Discover the colourful and lively seaside village and enjoy lunch in one of the beachside restaurants or cafes. Drink in the sheer beauty of The Twelve Apostles, the dramatic limestone stacks that are the popular icon of the Great Ocean Road drive.

Day 11: Port Campbell to Portland

Visit this peaceful seaside city and wander the streets dotted with stately historical buildings. Stroll down to the waterfront and become part of the vibrant atmosphere with ships loading up on local produce and fishing boats unloading their catch. Surf at one of the hot wave spots or fish for snapper, tuna and King George Whiting off the beach.

Day 12: Portland to Mt Gambier

Venture towards Adelaide and stop at the magnificent Mt Gambier and discover wondrous caves, sinkholes, rivers, lakes and coastline. Stop and sample some local wines at boutique vineyards or walk one of the many scenic treks in the area.

Day 13: Mt Gambier to Adelaide

Enjoy a laidback afternoon in Australia’s Church City. Jump on-board an Adelaide City Sightseeing Tour and cruise through the picturesque streets dotted with churches, historic buildings and leafy gardens.

Day 14: Adelaide 

Spend the morning at one of the lively markets sampling the local produce. Take a day tour to the majestic Barossa Valley and stop at many of the area’s best wineries. Indulge in flavourful wine tastings and enjoy a long gourmet lunch among the vines.

Day 15: Adelaide to Broken Hill

Stop by picturesque Broken Hill and drink in the beauty of this cultural town. Take a walk around the town centre and enjoy the laidback atmosphere. Visit the spectacular Sculpture Symposium. Wander through the many art galleries and museums and pop by Bells Milk Bar for spectacular malted milks and soda spiders.

Day 16: Broken Hill to Mildura

Absorb all that beautiful Mildura has to offer. Uncover the history of the city at one of the many museums or take a self-guided walking tour that showcases all the best attractions. Take a day trip to The Perry Sandhills and experience 10 hectares of striking red sand hills that were once part of the huge Willandra Lakes System and date back to an ice age of 40,000 years ago.

Day 17: Mildura to Hay

Marvel at the flattest country on earth in the rural town of Hays. Watch the sun set over the magnificent plains and drink in the brilliant colours. Take the Heritage Walk and learn the history of the town or relax on the riverbanks of the Murrumbidgee River, perfect for fishing and a late afternoon picnic.

Day 18: Hay to Wagga Wagga

Take a laidback stroll through one of the picturesque parks and gardens that the town has to offer and be sure to take a picnic with you. Experience a nature walk along the banks of the Murrumbidgee. Peruse the many art galleries and theatres of the area and buy locally made crafts or sample local produce at one of the many specialty markets.

Day 19: Wagga Wagga to Yass

Sit back and relax in laidback Yass and enjoy the historic country town and the home of explorer Hamilton Hume. Experience the many boutique galleries and wineries of the area and witness the restored heritage buildings. Visit the nearby Carey’s Cave and marvel at the folded limestone formations of the Wee Jasper Valley.

Day 20: Yass to Goulbourn

Walk around this quaint town and keep your eyes open for the Big Merino celebrating Australia’s fine wool industry. Visit Australia’s oldest brewery and take a tour followed by lunch in the dining area. Enjoy a family picnic at Belmore Park in the centre of the city.

Day 21: Goulbourn to Sydney

Make your way back to New South Wales’ lively capital. Enjoy a laidback afternoon wandering around the harbour and at night see the bridge lit up and dine at one of the city’s many restaurants offering cuisines to suit all budgets and tastes.
