Dos and Don’ts While Travelling in a Motorhome
Travelling in a motorhome is one of the best ways to explore Australia at your own pace, with the freedom to wake up somewhere new each day. Whether you’re cruising along the coast, winding through the mountains, or discovering small country towns, there’s nothing quite like the mix of adventure and comfort a motorhome provides.
But to make the most of your trip—and to keep it safe, stress-free, and enjoyable—there are a few golden rules to follow. From booking the right campsites to avoiding risky driving habits, these dos and don’ts will help you travel like a pro and protect both your motorhome and your holiday.

Dos: Your Keys to a Safe & Enjoyable Adventure
✅ Do #1: Book Your Campsites in Advance
Australia is a popular motorhome destination, and campsites can fill up quickly, especially during school holidays and peak summer months. Booking your sites ahead of time means you’ll have a guaranteed spot to park, plug in, and relax after a big day of exploring.
At Cruisin’ Motorhomes, our team is always happy to give advice on popular routes and help you secure campsites along the way—so you can spend less time worrying about availability and more time enjoying the journey. Feel free to reach out on our Instagram Page!
✅ Do #2: Stay in Paid Campsites Every Second Night
While free camping adds a sense of adventure, it’s important to balance it with regular stays at paid campsites. This gives you the chance to recharge your Cruisin’ Motorhome’s batteries, refill your fresh water, and properly empty the grey water and toilet cassette.
By stopping at a powered site every second night, you’ll also enjoy reliable access to amenities, laundry, and other handy facilities—helping you and your motorhome stay refreshed and ready for the next day’s adventures.

✅ Do #3: Use Our Reservation Team & Roadside Assistance
One of the biggest advantages of travelling with us is knowing you’re never on your own. Our friendly reservation team is here to help with campsite bookings, travel tips, and route advice before and during your journey.
And if the unexpected happens on the road, our roadside assistance team is just a phone call away (phone number is on the key ring). Having expert support gives you peace of mind so you can focus on enjoying your holiday instead of stressing about the little things.
✅ Do #4: Familiarise Yourself With Your Motorhome
Before you hit the open road, take a little time to get to know your vehicle. Learn how to use the kitchen, bathroom, waste systems, and electrical features so you’ll feel confident throughout your trip. Our staff will demonstrate everything to you on pickup, so feel free to ask any questions!
It’s also a good idea to check the mirrors, adjust your seat, and get comfortable behind the wheel. The more familiar you are with your motorhome, the smoother and safer your journey will be.

✅ Do #5: Plan Your Driving Times Wisely
Australia is a big country, and long drives can be tiring if you try to cover too much distance in one day. Keep your itinerary flexible, take regular breaks, and plan to drive during daylight hours. We recommend driving not more than 5 hours a day.
By pacing yourself, you’ll not only stay safer on the road but also have more time to stop at lookouts, enjoy roadside attractions, and really soak up the scenery. After all, the journey is just as important as the destination.
✅ Do #6: Enjoy the Journey
Travelling in a Cruisin’ Motorhome is about more than just getting from A to B—it’s about the freedom to explore at your own pace. Take the scenic detours, stop for a picnic by the beach, or spend an extra night in a town you love…
Remember, the best motorhome holidays are the ones where you slow down, relax, and make memories along the way. So don’t rush and savour the adventure.

Don’ts: Rules to Keep Your Journey Safe
❌ Don’t #1: Drive at Night
Driving after dark in Australia can be extremely dangerous, especially in rural and outback areas where wildlife like kangaroos and wombats are more active. Collisions not only put you at risk but can also cause serious damage to your Motorhome.
To stay safe, always plan your driving during daylight hours. This way, you’ll have better visibility, avoid unnecessary hazards, and arrive at your campsite relaxed and ready to enjoy the evening.
❌ Don’t #2: Continue Driving if You Have an Accident
If you’re involved in an accident, even a minor one, don’t keep driving. Stop immediately, make sure everyone is safe, and follow the correct steps by contacting the police if required and calling our Cruisin Roadside team right away at 1300 016 532.
We’ll guide you through what to do next and help get you back on the road as quickly and safely as possible. Continuing to drive without reporting an accident could cause further damage or complications with your rental agreement.

❌ Don’t #3: Drive on Unsealed Roads
Unsealed or gravel roads might look tempting for a shortcut or scenic detour, but they’re off-limits for Cruisin Motorhomes. These roads increase the risk of damage to the vehicle, from stone chips and tyre punctures to serious mechanical issues. It is your responsibility to know the Difference between sealed and unsealed roads.
Sticking to sealed roads keeps your motorhome protected and ensures your insurance cover stays valid. Plus, Australia’s highways and main routes are designed to take you to all the best destinations safely and comfortably.
❌ Don’t #4: Have Pets in the Vehicle
As much as we love furry friends, pets aren’t allowed inside your motorhomes. Keeping our vehicles pet-free ensures every guest enjoys a clean, fresh, and allergy-friendly space on their holiday.
If you’re travelling with pets, it’s best to arrange pet-friendly accommodation before or after your motorhome journey. This way, you can still enjoy your road trip while knowing your animals are safe and cared for.

❌ Don’t #5: Ignore Your Waste & Water Levels
Running out of fresh water or letting your waste tanks overflow can quickly turn a holiday into a headache. A full grey water tank can cause unpleasant smells, while an empty fresh tank means no showers, cooking, or drinking water. You can refer to the control panel of your motorhome to know where the levels are.
Make it a habit to check your levels daily and use dump points at campsites to empty waste responsibly as often as possible. Keeping on top of this simple routine makes your journey smoother and more enjoyable.
❌ Don’t #6: Overpack or Overload the Motorhome
It’s tempting to bring everything “just in case,” but overloading your camper can make it harder to handle and less fuel-efficient. Excess weight also puts unnecessary strain on the vehicle.
Pack smart by bringing only what you’ll use, and take advantage of the motorhome’s built-in storage solutions. Travelling lighter makes driving easier and leaves more space for souvenirs from your trip.
Travel Smart with Cruisin Motorhomes
By keeping these simple dos and don’ts in mind, you’ll set yourself up for a road trip that’s safe, comfortable, and full of great memories. From booking campsites in advance to avoiding risky driving habits, every step helps protect your motorhome and makes your holiday stress-free.
