How To Pack For Your Australian Motorhome Adventure
Let’s be honest… most of us are guilty of over-packing. At the time, it feels totally reasonable to squeeze in an extra pair of shoes or that “just in case” item you swear you’ll use. But when you’re travelling by motorhome, less IS more.

1. Ask yourself: “Do I really need this?”
One of the biggest perks of travelling by motorhome is the space, but even with a lot of storage in our motorhomes, that space fills up quickly. Before anything goes into your bag, pause and ask yourself if it’s genuinely essential. If you can live without it at home, chances are you can live without it on the road too!
2. Choose a soft, foldable bag instead of a suitcase
Hard suitcases are bulky, heavy, and awkward to store. A soft duffel bag or backpack is a far better option, as it can be folded away once unpacked and tucked neatly into storage compartments. For trips of a couple of weeks, this type of bag is more than enough. Hard suitcase will fit in the motorhomes; they might just be in your way sometimes!
3. Check the weather before you pack
Packing for the climate you’re travelling in makes a huge difference. Heading to Queensland in summer? You can safely leave most of the jumpers at home. A quick look at the forecast helps you pack smarter and avoid carrying clothes you’ll never wear. If you’re travelling to beautiful Tasmania, you might want a warm jacket even in summer!
4. Pack everything… then halve it!
This one’s a game-changer. Lay out everything you think you need, then remove half of it. Most travellers pack far more than necessary, and you’ll be surprised how little you actually use. Packing less means easier storage, quicker set-ups, and less clutter in your motorhome.

5. Make a packing list (and start early)
Begin your packing list a week before departure and add to it as things come to mind. Keeping it somewhere visible (like on the fridge) helps ensure nothing important is forgotten. As you pack, tick items off to stay organised and stress-free. Don’t forget to use our Cruisin’ Motorhome Checklist for reference!
6. Put heavy items at the bottom
Make the most of your bag space by packing heavier items first. Shoes, jackets, and bulkier clothing should go at the bottom, packed tightly into corners. This keeps everything balanced and makes unpacking much easier once you hit the road.
7. Roll your clothes instead of folding
Rolling clothes is a motorhome traveller’s secret weapon. It saves space, reduces creases, and makes items easier to grab from cupboards and drawers. If it can be rolled, roll it.
8. Plan to do laundry on the road
Most motorhome trips pass through towns with laundromats or holiday parks with washing facilities. Packing fewer clothes and planning a mid-trip wash saves space and makes packing much easier, especially on longer journeys.

9. Think multi-purpose, not “just in case”
Choose items that serve more than one purpose. A sarong can double as a towel, picnic blanket, or light cover-up. Activewear works for hiking, driving days, and casual outings. The more versatile your items, the less you need to bring.
10. Leave room for souvenirs
This one’s often overlooked! Whether it’s local produce, beach finds, or road trip mementos, having a little spare space means you won’t be playing packing Tetris at the end of your trip.
