When To Visit Tasmania: Climate & Weather Essentials

Tasmania is an ultimate year-round destination, and travelling by motorhome means you can enjoy every season at its best! With Australia’s coolest and most temperate climate, the island offers mild summers, crisp winters and plenty of sunshine!

Summer (December-February)

The busiest season brings warmer and pleasant days averaging between 20 and 24°C along the coast (far from the daily 40°C from Queensland), ideal for coastal walks, national park hikes or beach stops (note that the Tasmanian ocean is rather cool… good for a refreshing dip, and no crocs or jelly fish around!).

🌿 Events: Festivals like Taste of Tasmania, MONA FOMA (museum), the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race…

🌿 Outdoor: Explore one of the 19 stunning National Parks like Freycinet, Cradle Mountain, Maria Island, Tasman… Enjoy hiking, biking, wildlife spotting and more!

Autumn (March-May)

Cooler days and fewer crowds make autumn an absolute favourite for road trippers. Expect lower temperatures between 15 to 20°C, with nights around 10°C. This is the best time of the year to get out to the farms and vineyards.

🌿 Events: “The turning of the Fagus”, ECHO Festival, Agfest, Targa Tasmania Road Race…

🌿 Outdoor: Pack warmer clothing especially for nighttime! Think ‘layers’. National Parks look amazing with the change of colours.

Winter (June-August)

Winter is when Tasmania feels its cosiest. Expect crisp mornings, snow-tipped mountains, and quiet national parks. Average temperatures range from 5–12°C, and with the wind chill, it can drop below 0°C – so packing layers is essential! It’s a magical time to enjoy your motorhome’s heating, cook comfort meals in your onboard kitchen, and wake up to misty forest views.

🌿 Events: Dark Mofo, Overland Track, Festival of Voices, the Winter Feast, Chocolate Winterfest…

🌿 Outdoor: Stargazing by a cracking fire on the beach is incredible, spot the Southern Lights (Aurora Australis) and the Milky Way. You’ll have a heater in our vehicles (when plugged to 240v) but you’ll want to bring warm clothing to feel comfortable and cosy!

Spring (September-November)

Wildflowers bloom, waterfalls surge, and wildlife becomes more active. Spring brings a spectacular colour explosion. This is the windiest time of year with temperatures between 12 and 17°C (expect to lose a few degrees with the wind… that breeze can be chilly!).

🌿 Events: Bloomin’ Tulips Festival, Mural Fest in Sheffield, Tasmanian Craft Fair…

🌿 Outdoor: Enjoy scenic drives along the East Coast or through the Huon Valley. Hiking, biking, rafting are also popular.

Make the Most of Tasmanian Weather

Tasmania is known for “four seasons in one day,” especially in alpine and coastal regions. With a motorhome, you’ll always have a warm and comfortable base – a huge advantage in Tasmania’s changeable weather.

You can expect:

  • Cool, fresh mornings year-round
  • Stronger winds in coastal areas (especially in Spring)
  • Mild humidity
  • Rapid shifts in weather in mountain regions
  • Lots of sun (you’ll need sunscreen all year-round!)

Packing layers is key, and with plenty of storage in your Cruisin’ Motorhome, bringing enough clothing, jackets, and shoes is easy.

How To Get To Tasmania?

Flying is the quickest and most convenient way to begin your motorhome adventure. The Hobart Airport is located only a short 5-miunute taxi drive from our branch. Most major airlines, including Qantas, Virgin Australia, and Jetstar, operate daily flights from Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, and Adelaide. Flight times are short, with Melbourne to Hobart taking just under an hour.

If you’re travelling from mainland Australia with your own vehicle or want to enjoy a slower, scenic journey, the Spirit of Tasmania runs daily sailings between Geelong and Devonport in Tasmania’s north. Once you arrive in Devonport, you can drive south toward Hobart to pick up your Cruisin’ Motorhome and begin the full loop of the island.

Starting Your Journey With Cruisin’ Motorhomes

No matter how you choose to arrive, picking up your motorhome in Hobart is straightforward and stress-free. Our friendly local team will walk you through all the features of your vehicle, answer any questions, and make sure you’re fully prepared for the adventure ahead!

Driving Around Tasmania in a Motorhome

Driving around Tasmania is a great and rewarding experience! Here are some basic Australian road rules to follow:

  • In Australia we drive on the left hand side of the road.
  • All occupants in the vehicle must wear a seat belt.
  • Always carry a driver’s license in English language.
  • Drive no faster than the speed limit signs.
  • Alcohol level in Tasmania is 0.05 for experienced drivers. Provisional drivers and young drivers may not have any alcohol before driving.
  • Fatigue causes many crashes in Australia. When driving long distances, stop and rest every 2 hours.
  • Cruisin’ Motorhomes recommend NOT to drive at dusk, night and dawn. Learn more.
  • All traffic must proceed in a clockwise direction in a roundabout. A vehicle already on a roundabout has right of way over any vehicles entering.
  • Always overtake to the right. Be sure you can see enough of the road to complete overtaking and move back to your side of the road. Never overtake on corners, blind rises or on double white lines. When overtaking heavy vehicles in wet weather, beware of wind turbulence and wheel spray causing a reduction in visibility. Allow plenty of space behind you when pulling back in after passing a truck. Trucks can’t stop as quickly as cars, especially when carrying heavy loads.
  • Australia is lucky to have many native animals living in their natural habitats. Enjoy them, but remember they can be a hazard on country roads.
  • Remember that campervans can be double the height and length of standard vehicles. Make sure you know your Cruisin’ Motorhome dimensions! Keep an eye out for height indicator signs, overhanging tree branches or shop canopies, etc.
  • Our motorhomes and campervans DON’T fit into underground carparks.
